Abstract

Purpose: To determine the spherical aberrations in Singaporean Chinese population using the KR-1W wave front analyzer.

Methods: 492 eyes of 279 Singaporean Chinese patients for cataract surgery, aged 65.63 years ± 10.2 were included in this retrospective study. Eyes with corneal pathology and previous ocular surgery were excluded in the study. Measurements were obtained with the KR-1W system (Topcon Corp) with a 6.0 mm and 4.0 mm pupil by an experienced ophthalmic technician from September 2011 to August 2012.

Results: The mean total corneal HOA was 0.609 ± 0.436 µm and 0.203 ± 0.146 µm for 6mm pupil and 4mm pupil diameter respectively. The 6 mm pupil mean 3rd-order corneal aberration was 0.426 ± 0.317µm and the mean 4th-order corneal aberration was 0.374 ± 0.254 µm. For the 4 mm pupil it was 0.174 ± 0.125 µm for 3rd-order corneal aberration and 0.094 ± 0.087 µm for the 4th-order corneal aberration. For other aberrometric coefficients (6mm and 4 mm pupil): Trefoil (0.282 ± 0.257 µm; 0.124 ± 0.103 µm), Coma (0.286 ± 0.234 µm; 0.109 ± 0.090 µm), Tetrafoil (0.130 ± 0.186 µm; 0.048 ± 0.068 µm), and 2ndAstig (0.113 ± 0.149 µm; 0.039 ± 0.044 µm). The mean spherical equivalent (SE) was -1.59 D ± 3.84 D. There was no statistically significant correlation with age or refraction.

Conclusions: Corneal spherical aberration was noted to be higher in Singaporean Chinese population compared to reported studies of Caucasians. It is thus recommended to do preoperative measurement of wavefront aberrations if aspheric IOL will be used.
