Abstract

Purpose:: To evaluate the safety, efficacy and complications of the posterior chamber phakic toric visian TICL in myopic patients with high astigmatism.

Methods:: Retrospective study. Twenty two eyes in 15 files , with myopia and high astigmatism were reviewed from the Instituto de Oftalmologia "Fundación Conde de Valenciana" in Mexico City from the department of Cornea and Refractive surgery who underwent surgical correction with the STAAR posterior toric phakic intraocular lens ( STAAR Surgical AG, Monrovia, CA) with a mean age of 26.8. A detailed informed consent was taken from all patients. Basic examinations were performed before and after the surgery and a minimum follow-up was 3 months.

Results:: Twenty eyes in 15 patients with a mean age of 26.8 (21 to 35 years), 6 (40%) males and 9 (60%) females, 12 (54.5%) right eyes and 10 (45.5%) left eyes. Ten months in average were the follow up, and a mean sphere were -8.43 D +/- 2.82 and the post sphere were +0.12 +/- 0.50D, 95% were in +/- 1 D. Cylinder was -3.80D +/- 0.72D and post cylinder -0.82D +/- 0.65. The best corrected visual acuity before 20/380 (CF to 20/200) and after 20/30 ( 20/60 to 20/20). Opacification in the anterior capsule was observed in two cases which was only in the periphery without progression.

Conclusions:: Implantation of the TICL was an effective procedure with no significant complications and it is a good choice in patients with high myopia and astigmatism. It is important for a longer follow up.
