To determine the differences in concentration of mucins MUC 2 and MUC 5AC in tear film of patients with pterygium treated with conjunctival allograft.
Patients with primary pterygium and informed consent were included in the study. Pterygium surgery was performed with conjunctival allograft using a conventional technique. Dependant variables considered: 1) Tear Break Up Time (BUT), 2)Measurment of mucins MUC 2 and MUC 5AC in tear film identified by ELISA technique; these variables were measured before surgery, one and three months after surgery. Statistical analysis: descriptive statistics through repeated measures for dependant groups, considering significant differences with a p<0.05.
Eleven patients were included, two male (18.2%) and nine female (81.8%) with a mean age of 47.9 years (35 – 66 years). Mean measure of pterygium 2.72mm (1.0–4.3 mm) SD 0.85. The mean BUT previous to surgery 7.18 seconds, SD 1.26, first month after surgery 6.63, SD 1.6, third month after surgery 6.0, SD 1.26. The mean absorbance at of MUC 2 previous to surgery was 1.62 ( 1.28–2.00) SD 0.1837, first month 1.51 ( 1.39–1.97) SD 0.1573, third month 1.68 (1.56–1.83) SD 0.87. The mean mcg of MUC 5AC per mg of total protein in tear film was, previous to surgery 134.59 mcg/mg (16.2–623.1) SD 179.96, first month after surgery with a mean of 115.3 (15.99 – 468.9) SD 129.46, three months after with a mean 600.68 (35.8 – 1832.4) SD 780.93 . In the repeated measure analysis no statistical differences was found (p>0.05).
We did not observe any modification in concentrations of MUC 2, MUC 5AC, nor in BUT during follow up period , in patients submitted to pterygium surgery treated with conjunctival allograft .
