Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To investigate the Quality of life in AMD patients that are treated with Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) with Verteporfin. Methods: 28 PDT patients were asked to complete a Low Vision Quality of Life (LVQoL) questionnaire prior to the first treatment and one year after the first treatment. This questionnaire contains 25 questions divided in 4 categories (mobility, psychological adaptation, reading and daily tasks). The score ranges from 0 (low Quality of Life) to 125 (high Quality of Life). Visual acuity and reading acuity were measured at baseline and after one year. Best–corrected visual acuity was measured according to TAP criteria using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy (ETDRS) chart. Reading acuity measurements were obtained using Laboratory Experimental Ophthalmology (LEO) charts. For comparison to ETDRS acuity, reading acuity was transformed into a scale from 0 (no visual function) to 85 (full visual function). Visual acuity and reading acuity results were correlated with the LVQoL category scores. Results: Mean LVQoL score prior to PDT was 70.5 (SD 27.0) and after one year 70.1 (SD 27.0). The mean difference in LVQoL score was 0.4 (SD 18.7). Mean visual acuity at baseline was 53.1 ETDRS letters (SD 9.9) and after one year mean visual acuity loss was 10.5 ETDRS letters (SD 21.4). Mean reading acuity at baseline was 52.0 (SD 13.8), after one year mean reading acuity loss was 15.0 (SD 24.7). A decrease in ETDRS acuity was significantly correlated with a decreased LVQoL mobility score(r=0.4; P=0.019). A decrease in reading acuity was significantly correlated with a decreased LVQoL psychological adaptation score (r=0.5; P=0.007). There were no other significant correlations. Conclusions: The mean Quality of Life score remains stable one year after PDT, despite a slight mean decrease in visual acuity and reading acuity. However, a loss of visual acuity was correlated with a decrease in mobility score, and a loss of reading acuity was correlated with a decrease in psychological adaptation score.
