Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: Wavefront aberrations were found to change with accommodation (He, et al, Vision Res., 2000), but the differences in wavefront aberrations with accommodation between emmetropia and myopia are not well understood. The purpose of this study is to investigate wavefront aberrations in accommodated eyes of emmetropes and myopes. Methods: Wavefront aberrations were measured using a psychophysical wavefront sensor for 12 young subjects aged from 12 to 20 years old (mean, 16.5 year; 7 emmetropes and 5 myopes) at far (0 D) and near (4 D) viewing conditions. Three measurements for each viewing condition were obtained for the right eye only. RMS of wavefront aberrations and 35 Zernike aberrations were analyzed. Results: Significant differences between the emmetropic and myopic groups were found in RMS of total wavefront aberrations (including astigmatism and 3rd order and up) (F=6.44, p=0.02), Z2-2 (F=15.19, p=0.0009), Z22 (F=4.32, p=0.05) and Z3-3 (F=5.87, p=0.025). The differences between far and near viewing conditions were significant for x-axis coma Z31 (F=4.23, p=0.05) and spherical aberration Z40 (F=8.11, p=0.01). A t-test showed that the change in x-axis coma with accommodation was only significant for the emmetropic group (t = 2.09, p<0.05) while the difference in spherical aberration between far and near was only significant for the myopic group (t=2.85, p<0.025). Conclusions: In accommodative conditions, myopic eyes are different from emmetropic eyes in total wavefront aberrations as well as some Zernike aberrations. Spherical aberration and x-axis coma change with accommodation from 0D to 4D.
