Abstract

Abstract: : Purpose: To determine if chronic ischemia causes regional or diffuse axon damage in the monkey optic nerve. Methods: Chronic ischemia was induced by constant infusion of Endothelin-1 (ET-1) to the nasal superior optic nerve over a 24-week period in one eye in 14 monkeys. The eyes were perfusion fixed at the time of euthanasia and enucleated. Optic nerve cross sections were orientated, stained with phenylendiamine and evaluated for axonal damage by doing axon counts. Contralateral eyes were used as the control for assessing axon damage. Results:
