Abstract

Purpose : To describe clinical features of HLA B27 positive associated anterior uveitis in patients managed and followed in an Argentine Tertiary University Hospital.

Methods : This a retrospective, observational, single center study. Patients with diagnosis of HLA B27 positive associated anterior uveitis admitted in Hospital Universitario Austral between 1 June 2009 and 30 september 2015 were included in this study. Recorded data included, age, sex, time of follow up, date of the active episodes, number of recurrences, signs and symptoms at the beginning of the inflammatory episode, complications, final best corrected visual acuity, systemic inflammatory disease association, medical treatment, and surgical treatment of complications.

Results : : Thirty seven patients were included (13 women, and 24 men). Mean age was of 45 ± 14.81 years (range 14 – 69 years). Median time of follow up was 24 months (range: 0 to 160 months). Incidence density of recurrences was 54.77% per person-year. The highest number of recurrences occurred in the third trimester (OR: 4) compared with the first. In 6 out of 15 patients (40%) who underwent a rheumatologic examination, a seronegative spondyloarthropathy was diagnosed, either before or during the follow up after the occurrence of the acute anterior uveitis.

Conclusions : Patients with HLA B27 positive acute anterior uveitis have a frequent association with seronegative spondyloarthropathies. In an Argentine Tertiary University Hospital, the occurrence of the inflammatory episodes is more frequent during the third trimester of the year (winter).
