Abstract

Purpose : To describe the early spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) changes after spontaneous vitreomacular traction (VMT) release.

Methods : Patients with spontaneous VMT release who had undergone SD-OCT both before and after VMT release were included.

Results : A total of 13 eyes from 12 patients (8 females, 4 males) were included in the study. Mean age was 67 years (range 56-86). On average patients had 3 follow-up visits (range 1-6) and a mean follow-up time of 268 days. Visual acuity ranged from 20/20 to 20/200 pre VMT release and 20/20 to 20/50 post VMT release. Pre release, the ellispoid zone (EZ) was disrupted in 7 eyes and tented in 2 eyes, while ELM disruption was present in 6 eyes with no RPE abnormalities. Post release there remained 3 eyes with EZ disruption and one eye with ELM disruption. Pre release intraretinal cysts (IRC) were present in 11 eyes and subretinal fluid (SRF) was present in 4 eyes. Post release there were 2 cases with IRC and 3 with SRF. Central macular thickness and choroidal thickness were 306 and 206 microns respectively pre-release versus 264 (P<0.001) and 190 (P<0.05) microns post release.

Conclusions : Spontaneous release of VMT did not result in any additional changes on SD-OCT that were not already present. The majority of these changes resolved on their own. Both central macular and choroidal thickness were found to decrease after spontaneous release.
