Abstract

Amino acid analyses have shown that the major component of the insoluble fibrous proteins in the bovine vitreous is a collagen similar to that found in cartilage. Heat denaturation (55° C. for 15 minutes) solubilized 0.3 per cent of the vitreous collagen which migrated as a single major component when examined by disc electrophoresis. The mobility of this band corresponded to a. chains from skin collagen. It is concluded that vitreous collagen is composed of α1 type II polypeptide chains.
