Abstract
Antiviral agents have therapeutic activity against herpes simplex and vaccinia virus in animals and in man. The drugs available at present have serious limitations, despite their clinical usefulness. However, new agents are being discovered at a relatively rapid rate, and experimental techniques to evaluate these agents are improving so that progress in this area may be relatively rapid. These agents are not cauterizing agents and it is hoped that the stromal scarring and metaherpetic keratitis presumably caused by cautery may be avoided.
