Abstract
Purpose:
To assess the changes in uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity (CS), root-mean-square (RMS) wave-front error, Kmax and Km in patients with keratoconus (KC) after cross-linking.
Methods:
Twenty-eigth patients with KC grade 2-3 (Amsler classification)treated with cross-linking were studied for one year. UCVA and BCVA at distance (measured by ETDRS), subjective refraction and CS (by CSV1000) were assessed. Kmax, Km and RMS wave-front error with 3.5 mm of pupil size were evaluated by Pentacam topography. Measures were taken preoperatively and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. Statistical analysis was performed by using the Wilcoxon signed range test.
Results:
There was not significant difference in RMS wave-front error preoperatively and at any postoperatively measurement (p>0.05). UCVA (-0.09 logmar units) and BCVA (-0.07 logmar units) improved statistically (p<0.05) at 12 months postoperatively. CS improved at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. We did not any significant difference in Kmax and Km.
Conclusions:
Cross-linking treatment in KC patients grade 2-3 seems to improve UCVA, BCVA and CS although we did not find a reduction in RMS wave-front error and corneal keratometric measurements.
