Abstract

Purpose

To report macular characteristics in eyes with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) using a portable handheld spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Methods

Retrospective review of 12 patients (23 eyes) with previous diagnosis of ROP. Demographic data and clinical characteristics using indirect ophthalmoscope and Retcam imaging were reported and macular images using a portable handheld SD-OCT were obtained.

Results

Images acquired with portable handheld SD-OCT revealed macular morphologic abnormalities not visible during previous examination, consisting primarily in retinoschisis-like appearance in 16 eyes (69.5%), probable epiretinal membranes in 12 eyes (52.1%) and intraretinal hyperreflective dots in 2 eyes (8.6%).

Conclusions

Macular structural findings using portable handheld SD-OCT may help us understand the evolution of the disease in a better way. This non invasive approach of ROP patients may contribute in opportune treatment decisions.
