Abstract

Purpose: To assess the incidence of post operative diplopia and enophthalmos after orbital fracture repair.

Methods: We performed a meta-analysis of 10 studies from 2003 to 2012 on MEDLINE reporting incidence of diplopia and enophthalmos after orbital fracture repair.

Results: A total of 516 subjects were included with a mean of 46.9 patients per study. The probability of persistent diplopia and enophthalmos following surgery was 0.15 (range 0-0.35) and 0.11 (range 0-0.25), respectively.

Conclusions: The probability of post operative diplopia or enophthalmos is low. However, the distribution of probability between reviewed studies is clinically significant and likely reflects differences in surgical approach, experience, and clinical presentation.
