A CD of full-face images with different expressions named JACFEE (Japanese and Caucasian facial expressions of emotion) was used (Paul Ekman Group, LLC, San Francisco, CA; http://www.paulekman.com/researchproducts.html). JACFEE consists of 56 photographs of different people, half are men and half women, and half are Caucasian and half Japanese. The photographs are in color and each illustrates one of seven different emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, surprise, and sadness). The photographs were taken with the same background, which was a light blue screen, and the people were all wearing a similar white shirt with collar. There are eight images for each emotion giving a total of 56 images. Among the eight images, there are two male and two female Caucasians, and two male and two female Asians. The image size was 1250 × 990 pixels. The vertical height of each face (from the hair line to the bottom of the chin) was approximately four fifths of the height of the monitor. The monitor height was 28.5 cm. Thus, each face was approximately 22.8 cm high, which is close to the size of a real face. It must be noted that, in everyday life, people with normal vision would not usually view faces at a distance of 57 cm. However, people with low vision often use a large-screen computer or TV or a combination of large screen and decreased viewing distance.
