Abstract

The ultrastructure of the anterior, posterior, and lateral sections of the rat lens were studied using scanning electron microscopy. Three variations of lens fibers were found, each with its characteristic ball and socket interdigitation and regular laminar arrangement in one plane. They varied considerably in contour, size, extrafibrillar spacing, and surface distribution of interlocking junctions.
