Abstract

Friction between cornea and tonometer footplate restricts formation of the plunger indentation in open manometer calibration studies of the indentation tonometer. Steel plates with burnished Teflon coating lubricated with mineral oil emulsion generated less than one third of the friction of uncoated plates lubricated with saline when drawn across the corneas of enucleated human eyes.
