Abstract

The eyes of rhesus monkeys were exposed to argon (514.5 nm.) and ruby (694.3 nm.) laser radiation. Data were obtained using 2.3 to 3 mm. and 7.5 to 8 mm. corneal spot diameters. Retinal exposure sites were examined by ophthalmoscopic and histopathologic techniques. Macular and extramacular exposure sites were separated and analyzed. Probit analysis was utilized in the evaluation of all data and regression lines, and associated confidence intervals were obtained. Utilization of flat preparations of the pigment epithelium and sensory layers of the retina confirmed damage at the lower power levels. Comparable lesions (in terms of ED50 points) were analyzed for the two systems to establish similarities and significant differences.
