Abstract

The concentration of all free amino acids and many related compounds in the lens of rabbits has been determined by ion exchange chromatography, and the concentration of the amino acids in the lens has been compared with those found in a previous study in aqueous and. vitreous humors. The concentration of every free amino acid in the lens ivas shown to be higher than in the aqueous of the posterior and anterior chambers and still higher than in me vitreous. The ratio of the concentration in the lens to that in the aqueous humor washighest for acidic, lowest for basic, and intermediate for neutral amino acids. The observation thatthe concentration of all free amino acids is higher in the lens than in the fluids which bathe it leads to the conclusion that these compounds enter the lens by active transport.
