Abstract
Purpose:
The current study is to investigate the aqueous humor lymphocyte subsets to aid in diagnosis of acute anterior uveitis.
Methods:
In this study we collected aqueous humor sample through a limbal paracentesis under aseptic precautions in 25 patients presenting with acute anterior uveitis due to various causes which included viral anterior uveitis, presumed tubercular anterior uveitis, ocular sarcoidosis, idiopathic anterior uveitis and controls (senile cataract). Flow cytometric analysis was done on these samples to establish CD4/CD8 ratio.
Results:
No lymphocytes were detected in aqueous humor of controls ;the CD4/CD8 ratio was < 1 in viral anterior uveitis, >1 in idiopathic anterior uveitis ,presumed tubercular anterior uveitis and HLA b27 related anterior uveitis while it was >7 in patients of ocular sarcoidosis.
Conclusions:
CD4/CD8 ratio analysis in aqueous humour in patients with acute anterior uveitis can be a simple and inexpensive method of investigation to aid in diagnosis.
