Abstract

Purpose: To detect abnormality of the visual function in patients with early diabetic macular oedema using M-charts, Amsler test and white on white (w/w) and blue on yellow (b/y) perimetry.

Methods: Conventional w/w perimetry and b/y perimetry were performed in the central 10° of the visual field in 24 patients (mean age 52 years, mean visual acuity 0.7) diagnosed with diabetic macular oedema and clear optic media. To assess metamorphopsia- Amsler test and M-charts were used.

Results: Mean sensitivity in b/y perimetry was 17.2 dB and 25.9 dB in w/w perimetry, mean defect 8.9 dB and 3.6 dB and loss variance 4.8 dB and 3.3 dB, respectively (p<0.0001). Mean vertical metamorphopsia score was 0.11°, mean horizontal metamorphopsia score was 0.16°. The rate of detection metamorphopsia was 29% for Amsler test and 41% with M-charts

Conclusions: The mean sensitivity is lower, mean deviation and loss variance higher in b/y in comparison to w/w perimetry. M-chart is more sensitive than Amsler test method for evaluating metamorphopsia. B/y perimetry and M-charts detect earlier than conventional methods the visual function loss in early diabetic maculopathy.
