To determine the correlation of total corneal astigmatism considering the posterior corneal astigmatism measured by Oculus Pentacam , with the manifest refractive astigmatism in aphakic patients.
We studied 11 aphakic eyes of 8 patients , including 4 women and 4 men, with an age range of 28-82 years with a mean of 58.5 years. All patients underwent manifest refraction by retinoscopy by the same optometrist without knowing keratometry, and did Oculus Pentacam by the same operator .
Correlation of total corneal astigmatism taking into account the posterior corneal astigmatism measured by Oculus Pentacam, with refractive astigmatism showed, using the Sr = 0.2805, confidence interval 95%,p = 0.2, whit no statistically significant correlation. Correlation of posterior corneal astigmatism was conducted to manifest refractive astigmatism Sr = 0.3318. We analyzed the correlation between the total astigmatism astigmatism of the anterior and posterior, there is a directly proportional correlation with astigmatism back side of the face anterior and inversely proportional to the total corneal astigmatism with r = 1, p = 0.001.
Since our sample was small, statistical significance of the results was not achieved, so that the analysis in a larger population of aphakic patients is required to determine the degree of influence of astigmatism of the posterior surface of the cornea. However due to the correlation of posterior corneal astigmatism with manifest refractive astigmatism we found (r = 0.3318 equivalent to 30%),do not rule out the value obtained with the backside Oculus Pentecam have influence on the total corneal astigmatism.
