Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the influences of corneal astigmatism or IOL decenter on optical quality in a spherical and two aspheric IOLs (high spherical aberration-correcting aspheric and Kowa Avansee Asperic IOL).

Methods: For the computer numerical simulation, a modified Liou-Brennan model eye was used. The model eye was designed to include corneal asphericity, a pupil, and intraocular lenses. Calculation of the modulation transfer function (MTF) was performed with CodeV Ver. 10.5 (Synopsis Co. Ltd.) software in 555 nm monochromatic light. The sizes of the entrance pupil were from 2.0 mm to 6.0 mm. Spherical aberration of high spherical aberration-correcting aspheric and Avansee Asperic IOL in 6.0 mm diameter were -0.27 μm and -0.04 μm respectively.

Results: For defocus condition and corneal astigmatism of 0.5 D and more, MTF in Avansee Aspheric were significantly higher than those of the other IOLs. When the IOL decenter exceeded 0.4 mm, the optical characteristics of the Avansee aspheric became higher than those of the other IOLs.

Conclusions: These results suggest that Avansee Asperic IOL provide better optical performance in condition of defocus, or decenter optical system.
