Abstract

Purpose: To study the epidemiology of overall morbidity rate due to diseases of the eye and its adnexa in children aged 0-13 resulting in blindness and low vision.

Methods: For the first time there has been made the analysis of general morbidity rate of the eye and its adnexa in young people in the Azerbaijan Republic on the basis of the materials of the state statistical reports over 2007-2010 in total in the republic and separately in the territories with due regard to the absolute number of the patients and per 100,000 young people. The research is continuous.

Results: Overall morbidity rate of the eye and its adnexa in children aged 0-13 years in 10 years is characterized by the increased number of patients in general in the republic by 41.2% (from 23,447 people in 2001 to 33,119 people in 2010). Overall morbidity rate of myopia in children aged 0-13 years in 10 years is characterized by the increased number of patients in general in the country by 13.2% (from 10,452 people in 2001 to 11,829 people in 2010). Overall morbidity rate of blindness and low vision in children aged 0-13 has been analyzed for a 5-year period (2007-2010). It is characterized by a decreased number of patients in general in the republic by 2.7% (from 2,551 people in 2007 to 2,481 people in 2010). Overall morbidity rates of the eye and its adnexa per 100,000 children aged 0-13 in 10 years is characterized by an increase in general in the country by 78.5% (from 990.0 in 2001 to 1,767.4 in 2010). Overall morbidity rates of myopia per 100,000 children aged 0-13 in 10 years is characterized by a general increase in the country by 43.0% (from 441.3 in 2001 to 631.3 in 2010). Overall morbidity rates of blindness and low vision per 100,000 children up to 13 have been analyzed for a 5-year period (2006-2010) and are characterized in general in the country by the 6.3% increase (from 124.5 to 132.4).

Conclusions: Thus, overall morbidity rate in children aged 0 to 13 is characterized by growth in major classes of eye diseases in the analyzed period. In the structure of morbidity in children the myopia is prevalent accounting for 88.0%.
