Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the accommodative microfluctuations and accommodative lag during orthokeratology lenses wear.

Methods: Twenty myopic subjects who wore orthokeratology lenses and 20 myopic subjects who wore spectacles were enrolled.Accommodative response (AR) was measured with an open field infrared auto-refractor (Grand Seiko WAM-5500) using accommodative stimuli (AS) of 0 - 4 diopter (D.The magnitude of accommodative microfluctuations, accommodative lag,and accommodative error index (AEI) were calculated.

Results: With an AS of 0 D,1 D,2 D,3 D and 4 D,the magnitudes of accommodative microfluctuations of the orthokeratology lens group were all larger than the spectacle group(See table). The accommodative lags of the orthokeratology lens group were smaller than the spectacle group. The AEIs of the orthokeratology lens group were also smaller than the spectacle group. Table: The accommodative microfluctuations after orthokeratology comparing with spectacle group Group 0D 1D 2D 3D 4D Orthokeratology 0.232±0.089 0.297±0.087 0.401±0.131 0.429±0.137 0.495±0.100 Spectacle 0.130±0.058 0.181±0.107 0.293±0.118 0.332±0.103 0.378±0.144 t 3.704 3.227 2.365 2.179 2.951 P <0.01 <0.01 <0.05 <0.05 <0.05

Conclusions: Compared to spectacles, the magnitudes of accommodative microfluctuations were larger with orthokeratology lenses, while the accommodative lags were smaller at high accommodative demands.
