Abstract
Purpose:
Analyze the results obtained during the screening of AMD at the University Hospital. To determine risk factors and clinical features.
Methods:
Patients undertook standardized questionnaire on risk factors. Biomicroscopic examination of the anterior and posterior segment. We classified the positive cases with classification of AMD and classified according the Clasification of Aged Macular Degeneration (Jager R, Mieler W, Miller J., Age-Related Macular Degeneration. N Engl J Med 2008;358:2006-17).
Results:
The gender of the poblation with AMD was composed by 40,09% male and and 59,91% female. The racial distribution was: 77,02% caucásian, 20,73% mestizos,1,35% aboriginal, 0,45% oriental and 0,45% black. The color of the iris was: Brown: 75,68%, light blue: 11% and médium: 12,61%. The relation with smoking habit was: 87,65% does not smoke ,and the other smoke less tan one pack of cigarettes or 1 or 2 packs a day. In regards to sun exposure: without exposure5,4%; the rest: 1 hour 63%; 2 hours 23,45%, 6 hours 2,45% and 8 hours 4,95%. In relation to consumption of red meat: once a week 31,57%, twice 26,57%, thrice 19,36%, four times 9,45%, five times 6% and never 6%. In relation to consumption of fish: once a week 59%, twice 0,5%, thrice 17%, 4 times 0 %, five times 7,20% and never 5,85%. In regards to the classification of AMD, we found this distribution: A grade: 82%, B grade: 5 %, C grade: 0,60% and D grade: 0,60%.
Conclusions:
The poblation was stratified according to risk factors, related to dietary and hygienic habits, we concluded that smoking and intake of red meat, are a major risk factor for developing Macular Degeneration Age-Related (AMD).
