Purpose
To present the topical tacrolimus outcomes in Thygeson Superficial Punctate Keratitis in 11 cases.
Methods
Retrospective case series, carried out at Paulista School of Medicine, São Paulo, Brazil. Medical records of 11 patients, diagnosed with Thygeson Superficial Punctate Keratitis, in use of Tacrolimus eye ointment 0,03%, were collected, in different clinics in São Paulo. The diagnosis was based on clinical symptoms and signs.
Results
The age of patients ranged from 7 to 64 years and 7 were female. The average follow-up was 5 years. Visual acuity improved in 100% of patients, being equal to or better than 20/25 in both eyes of 73% of the patients; 27% had visual acuity between 20/30 and 20/50 in the both eyes before treatment and improved to 20/25 or better. Similarly 100% of the patients showed improvement of symtoms and signs (photophobia, foreign body sensation, tearing, and typical superficial punctate keratitis).
Conclusions
Topical Tacrolimus seems to be effective to control the symptoms and signs of patients with Thygeson Superficial Punctate Keratitis. Tacrolimus has the advantage of triggering fewer side effects compared to the use of topical corticoid, treatment of choice for patients with acute Thygeson Keratitis.
