Abstract
Purpose:
To describe the visual outcomes after an acute corneal hydrops who received medical management.
Methods:
Prospective, longitudinal, descriptive and cases study evaluating the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in logMar of patients in the Fundación Hospital Nuesra Señora de la luz I.A.P with corneal hydrops who received medical management. Two groups of pacients according to age: Group 1: 20 and older and group 2: under 20 years. Inclusion criteria: gender, age, BCVA, degree of hydrops, location and duration.
Results:
In Group 1 included 19 patients, 10 were female, the average age of presentation was 29 years old, the correlation between BCVA during the acute hydrops and once resolved was equal in 12 patients, 2 lines improvement in 1 patient, 3 lines in 3 patients, 4 lines in 1 patient, 6 lines in 1 patient and 8 lines in 2 patients. The average time to resolution was 2.2 months.
In Group 2 we included 4 patients, all were men, the average age was 13 years old. The correlation in BCVA was equal in 1 patient, 6 lines improved in 1 patient and 14 lines in 1 patient. Average time for resolution was 1.6 months.
According to the degree of hydrops the BCVA was equal or better if the degree was lower and worse if it was greater in both groups.
The medical treatment used was hypertonic sodium chloride solution 5% and ointment 10% overnight.
Conclusions:
The BCVA after hydrops who recived medical treatment may be equal or better in some patients. Some patients with good visual acuity will not need a surgical treatment.
