Abstract
Purpose:
To study the visibility of the fundus using toric contact lenses for vitreous surgery in a model eye inserted with a toric intraocular lens (IOLs).
Methods:
Toric IOLs, 311T5 with a cylindrical power of 3.0 diopters and spherical power of 20.0 D (HOYA), or ST6AT5 (Alcon) were placed in a fluid-filled model eye with corneal astigmatism of 2.0 D. A United States Air Force test target was placed internally on the posterior surface. The inside of the model eye was illuminated with BrightStar® and a toric contact lens for vitreous surgery with a cylindrical power of 3.0 D (HHV toric type 1) was placed on the corneal surface, and the test target was observed. The contrast and length ratio of the grating targets vertical to horizontal through HHV toric type 1 were determined to compare with those through HHV 5D.
Results:
The contrast of the targets viewed through HHV toric type 1 were significantly increased at 16 cycles/mm, compared with that through HHV 5D (311T5, p < 0.001; ST6AT5, p < 0.001, Student’s t-test), and the length ratio of the target with HHV toric type 1 was decreased in the eye inserted with 311T5 (p < 0.001) and increased with ST6AT5 (p = 0.003).
Conclusions:
Toric contact lenses for vitreous surgery appear to be useful for improving the visibility during vitreous surgery in the eyes implanted with toric IOLs.
