To determine the prevalence of age-related maculopathy (ARM) in a large German sample.
The GHS Eye Survey is a population-based, prospective, observational single-center study in the Rhein-Main-Region in western Mid-Germany with a total of nearly 15000 participants. The study sample is stratified for decades of age, gender and residence; age was 35 to 74 years at enrollment. Evaluation of fundus photographs of the first 5000 participants was performed by two experienced independent consultants in ophthalmology for the presence of hard and soft drusen, retinal pigmentary abnormalities, and late forms of atrophic or neovascular age-related macular generation (AMD).
Photographs of 4335 from 5000 participants were evaluable, 665 were not gradable due to reduced photo quality, obscuring lesions or missing pictures. Small hard drusen (<63 µm) were present in 37.4% of participants. Signs of early ARM (soft drusen, pigmentary abnormalities) were detected in 13.8%. Late AMD (geographic atrophy or neovascular AMD) was found in 0.1%, respectively.
The GHS Eye Survey is the first population-based study on the prevalence of age-related maculopathy in a representative German sample. Small hard drusen are frequent, advanced AMD is rare in this population. These findings are comparable to other European populations, in particular the Rotterdam Eye Study. The randomly selected sample will provide substantial epidemiologic data including incidence data after recall.
