Abstract

Purpose:

To analyze the prognostic factors of postoperative cystoid macular edema (PCME) by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).

Methods:

Retrospective review the ophthalmic charts of 6 eyes of 6 patients (4 men and 2 women, age: 65-79 years) diagnosed of PCME. Measures automatically calculated by the SD-OCT software were recorded including central subfield thickness, cube average thickness and macular cube volume. In addition, we measured the initial height of the neuroepithelial detachment, elongation of the photoreceptor outer segment (OS) at the central fovea overlying the neuroepithelial detachment and subfoveal choroidal thickness.

Results:

All cases showed a particular appearance in the SD-OCT: symmetric cystoid macular edema with regard to the fovea (mirror-like image), neuroepithelial detachment, disruption of the external limiting membrane and posterior hyaloid attached to the macula. We evidenced a significant correlation (P: 0.015 and r: -0.886) between the elongation of photoreceptor OS and the final visual outcome, but with no other of the analyzed parameters.

Conclusions:

The degree of photoreceptor OS elongation as measured by SD-OCT may be an independent relevant prognostic factor in cases of PCME.
