Abstract

Purpose: : Foveal retinoschisis is sometimes observed in highly myopic eyes (Myopic retinoschisis; MRS). On the other hand, X-liked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS) is a rare retinal degeneration. However, these morphologic differences are not fully understood. Confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO) is a device to provide the high-resolution and high-quality images using accurate focusing technique of the laser light source. In this study, we evaluate the foveal retinoschisis in MRS and XLRS using the retromode imaging of cSLO.

Methods: : Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and retromode of cSLO were obtained in all eyes at the same day. We used the F10 (Nidek Meditec) as cSLO.

Results: : Fourteen eyes of fourteen patients with highly myopia and ten eyes of five patients diagnosed as XLRS were examined. Foveal retinoschisis was observed in all eyes on SD-OCT. Retromode imagings demonstrated the finger print patterns corresponding to the lesion area projected on SD-OCT in both MRS and XLRS patients. Vitrectomy and inner limiting membrane peeling had been performed in three eyes with MRS and four eyes with XLRS. Retromode imagings proved the reduction of the extent of retinoshchisis after surgery.

Conclusions: : Retromode imaging of cSLO could visualize the foveal retinoschisis and its extent in both MRS and XLRS noninvasively, even after surgery. Retromode imaging is useful tool to evaluate the retinoschisis either in MRS or XLRS.
