Abstract

Purpose:

To investigate the change of choroidal thickness in eyes showing recurrent inflammation during the follow-up of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) after high-dose steroid therapy.

Methods:

Choroidal thicknesses in eyes with VKH were reviewed during the follow-up after high-dose steroid therapy. Choroidal thickness was measured using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography. Recurrence of inflammation was defined as a condition which needed more dose of oral steroid than that used previously.

Results:

Among 17 patients with VKH (mean age: 52 years), 8 patients showed recurrent inflammation during the follow-up. The mean choroidal thickness in eyes with recurrent inflammation was 421±125 μm, which was significantly larger than that measured at the previous examination (297±93 μm, Student t test, P<0.01).

Conclusions:

Choroid becomes thick in eyes with relapsing VKH. Thickening of choroid may be a hallmark of recurrence of inflammation during the follow-up of VKH after high-dose steroid therapy.
