To investigate the effect of transglutaminase2 on the posterior capsular opacity using extracapsular lens extraction (ECLE) model in transglutaminase2 knockout mice.
Extracapsular lens extraction was conducted in 34 transglutaminase knockout mice and in 37 wild type B6 mice. Mice were sacrificed at day 0,4, and 14 days and histology was obtained. Lens capsular images were digitally captured (Axiovs40AC V 18.104.22.168. software, Carl Zeiss, Germany) and lens epithelial cell (LEC) proliferation, Soemmering’s ring formation and posterior capsular wrinkling were scored by standard photograph and were compared between those groups.
Posterior capsular opacity was significantly reduced (p=0.015, Mann-Whitney U test) with lower LEC proliferation (p=0.028) and less Soemmering’s ring formation (p=0.021) in transglutaminase2 knockout mice at postoperative 4 days. While, there was no difference of posterior capsular opacity between those groups at posteoperative 14days.
Transglutaminase2 seemed to engage in the post-lens-extraction LEC proliferation especially in the early postoperative period in mouse model.
