Abstract

Purpose: : The aim of our study was to measure choroidal thickness of eyes with different degree of myopia in patients of different ages and to analyse the correlation with retinal thickness, more precilesy of outer retina, and with visual acuity.

Methods: : Prospective study of 80 eyes of 80 patients, 30 to 78 years old, divided in 4 groups depending on myopia degree (A : very mild myopia ( - 12 diopters) were analysed : visual acuity (EDTRS charts), SD-OCT with Heidelberg Spectralis ± « enhanced depth imager » software to measure choroidal and retinal thicknesses of the 1000 central microns. Two independant and masked lectures were done for each eye.

Results: : Group A : mean axial length : 23.5 millimieters (mm), ETDRS score : 85 (logMAR 0), mean choroidal thickness : 272 microns, mean retinal thickness : 235 micronsGroup B : mean axial length : 25.36 mm, ETDRS score : 77 (logMAR 0.25), mean choroidal thickness : 254 microns, mean retinal thickness : 218 micronsGroup C : mean axial length : 27.65 mm, ETDRS score : 81 (logMAR 0.1), mean choroidal thickness : 161 microns, mean retinal thickness : 234 micronsGroup D : mean axial length : 30.3 mm, ETDRS score : 65 (logMAR 0.4), mean choroidal thickness : 57 microns, mean retinal thickness : 206 micronsThere was also a negative correlation between choroidal thickness and age in group C and D

Conclusions: : Choroidal thickness decrease with degree of myopia and with age notably in high and pathologic myopias. Our study could not elucidate, with accuracy, the relation between this reduction and visual acuity probably because of lack of cone density resolution of nowadays commercially spectral domain OCT.
