Abstract

Purpose: : To map choroidal thickness (ChT) in subjects with choroidal neovascularised (CNV) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) prior and post treatment regimen of three Anti-VEGF injections using a 3D-1060nm-Widefield-OCT.

Methods: : 15 subjects were imaged by 3D-1060nm-OCT performed over a 36ºx36° field of view. Axial length and blood pressure measurements were recorded. Eyes were graded according to AREDS classification. The ChT at the subfoveal location and ChT-maps between retinal pigment epithelium and the choroidal/scleral-interface, were generated and analysed.

Results: : ChT mapping of all successfully treated eyes (vision improvement and diagnosed with no fluid in the retina, n=5) demonstrated thinning within the region of the CNV. One eye with fluid increase, in a location unrelated to the initially found lesion, indicated a second lesion related to the retinal fluid accumulation. An eye with decrease in vision and decreased fluid in the retina had subretinal fluid accumulation and increase in choroid thickness below the CNV. Remaining eyes with moderate improvement (same or better vision and fluid reduction) showed no or slight reduction in choroidal thickness.

Conclusions: : 3D-1060nm-Widefield-OCT has shown a relationship between the retinal changes and choroidal thickness alteration. In contrast to the conventional assessment of pathological thickness change in several locations, thickness maps allow determination of the choroid thickness status over the extent of the imaged area and may be therefore a more insightful clinical biomarker than choroidal thickness values alone.
