Abstract

Purpose: : To utilize spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) one line raster images to study choroidal thickness in the macular region of glaucomatous eyes.

Methods: : A retrospective review of 146 eyes seen in the glaucoma practice of the New England Eye Center, Boston, MA between November 2009 and May 2010 was performed. Macular choroidal thickness was manually measured by two independent observers on enhanced Cirrus HD-OCT high definition one line scans and compared to age-matched normal eyes with respect to the horizontal thickness across the macular region. Choroidal thickness was further analyzed with respect to patient age, intraocular pressure (IOP), and average retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in the glaucomatous eyes.

Results: : The 146 eyes were divided by clinical subgroups into primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) (n = 50), normal tension glaucoma (NTG) (n = 50), glaucoma suspects (n = 31), and other forms of glaucoma (n = 15). The choroid was found to be significantly thinner in the glaucomatous eyes than in normal eyes, with the NTG group demonstrating the greatest reduction in choroidal thickness (p < 0.0001). Based on prior studies, a negative correlation exists between choroidal thickness and age; however only the POAG group maintained this negative correlation with age. Choroidal thickness was only found to be correlated with IOP only in the glaucoma suspect eyes and RNFL was not correlated within any of the glaucoma clinical subgroups.

Conclusions: : There is macular choroidal thinning in glaucomatous eyes compared to normal eyes.
