Abstract
Purpose: :
To investigate the correlation between multifocal pattern electroretinigram (mfPERG) amplitude and optical coherence tomography (OCT) macular thickness in eyes with temporal hemianopia from chiasmal compression
Methods: :
Nineteen eyes from 19 patients with permanent temporal VF defects from chiasmal compression and 18 eyes from 18 healthy subjects underwent mfPERG using stimulus pattern of 19 rectangles, each consisting of twelve squares, standard automated perimetry (SAP) and fourier domain macular measurements. The response of mfPERG was arevage for a subset of 8 nasal rectangles and for a subset of 8 temporal rectangles in both patients and controls. The OCT macular thickness were registraded according to an overlaid OCT generated checkboard with 36 checks. The macular thickness parameters were subsequently averaged separately for nasal and temporal area ( 18 checks per quadrant) of the macular area: supero Comparations were made using Student's t test. Correlations among measurements were verified with Pearson's correlation coefficients
Results: :
All amplitudes of mfPERG and OCT macular measurements were significantly lower in eyes with temporal defect than normal. A significant correlation was observed between OCT macular thickness and mfPERG parameters
Conclusions: :
In patients with chiasmal compression, mfPERG amplitudes and OCT macular thickness were significant related. Both mfPERG and OCT quantify neuronal loss and both technologies are useful in understanding structure-function relationship in patients with chiasmal compression
