Abstract

Purpose: : The relative frequency of partial blinks in normal and Dry Eye subjects has relevance to tear film breakup and corneal exposure. Our research has previously shown that blink patterns in patients with high levels of ocular discomfort are associated shorter inter-blink intervals and a higher proportion of full versus partial blinks. To date, no artificial tear has been shown to normalize blink proportions and inter-blink intervals. We investigated the relative proportion of full blinks in a Dry Eye population treated with Systane Balance, a novel artificial tear designed to restore lipid layer integrity and enhance tear film stability. The relative proportion of full blinks was investigated using the OPI 2.0 System (Abelson 2010.)

Methods: : Blink statistics were measured for a subject population of 31 Dry Eye patients at two visits one week apart. The visual task assigned was viewing a documentary. Each visit consisted of a baseline measurement after which Systane was administered. Measurements were made at 10 minutes and 55 minutes after treatment. On days between the two visits, patients were instructed to administer Systane Balance four times per day. The blink statistics were measured using the OPI 2.0 system at each visit.

Results: : Results show that the proportion of full blinks decreased for the population mean by 20% from the initial visit to the final visit (p=0.045). Compared to baseline, the proportion of full blinks at the 55 minute time point decreased by 14% and 18% at the initial and follow-up visit respectively (p=0.075).Additionally, at the pre-treatment time point there was an inverse relationship between the proportion of full blinks and the inter-blink interval (IBI) (correlation = -0.30, p=0.076).

Conclusions: : In this study, treatment with Systane Balance significantly increased the normalization of the blink pattern suggesting a beneficial effect.
