Abstract
Purpose: :
To evaluate the reliability of reading performance mesurement with a new testing device (Salzburg Reading Desk advanced, SRD) for a young and pre-presbyopic population.
Methods: :
Reading performance of 50 subjects divided to two age groups (23 - 30 years, group I and 38 - 49 years, group II) with distance corrected eyes was investigated. Two measurements were performed at each subject with a mean interval of 31 ± 8.24 days (mean ±SD). The repeatability of the tests was estimated by the Bland -Altman method and the Friedman-test was used to compare the results of both groups.
Results: :
Mean patient age in group I (n = 25) was 25.7 ± 2.10 years and in group II (n = 25), 44.6 ± 5.04 years.In group I a mean reading acuity with distance correction of 0.1622 logRAD (0.1612 ± 0.1352 logRAD, vs. 0.1632 ± 0.1457 logRAD) and group II a mean reading acuity with distance correction of 0.1374 logRAD (0.1668 ± 0.1034 logRAD, vs. 0.1080 ± 0.1003 logRAD) was observed with no significant difference between both groups (p=0,81 / 0,64). Mean reading distance of the first group was in first measurement 36.91 ± 8.97cm vs. 35.68 ± 8.04cm) and in second group 44.51 ± 9.20 cm vs. 44.27 ± 9.58 cm (p=0,01 / <0,001).Analysis of repeatibility resulted in a good agreement of reading acuity (Mean difference (MD): 0,01 (group 1) / 0,01 (group 2), coefficient of repeatibility (COR): 0,24 (group 1) / 0,16 (group 2)), and reading distance (MD: 0,96 cm (group 1) / 0,44 cm (group 2), COR: 15,4 (group 1) / 17,6 (group 2)).
Conclusions: :
The SRD can reliably measure reading performance in young and pre-presbyopic populations.
