Abstract

Purpose:

This study looks for an association between the C-reactive protein level and self reported glaucoma.

Methods:

The 2005-2006, and 2007-2008 NHANES data sets were downloaded from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) wed site and imported into Stata/IC version 10.0 (StataCorp LP, College Station, Texas, US). Variables analyzed were: C-reactive protein level, self reported glaucoma, sex, and age. The data for the C-reactive protein were log transformed and analyzed for the geometric mean . Comparison was made between the geometric mean of the C-reactive protein of the self reported glaucoma and no glaucoma history groups for all subjects, male, females, blacks and non-blacks over 39 years of age

Results:

The crude geometric mean for the C-reactive protein of the self reported no glaucoma and glaucoma history groups for all subjects over 39 years of age were 0.205 (95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.196-0.214 mg/DL) and 0.210 mg/DL (95% CI: 0.186-0.237) respectively. An adjusted Wald chi square test for statistical significance of the difference between these means yielded a p value of 0.691. A lack of a statistical significant difference between the crude and age adjusted geometric means of the C-reactive protein of the self reported glaucoma and no glaucoma group was observed when comparisons were made within gender and racial groups.

Conclusions:

Conclusions: There is no association of the geometric mean of the C-reactive protein level to self reported glaucoma in individuals over thirty-nine years of age.
