To investigate frequencies of detecting sub-threshold laser irradiation spots of selective retina therapy (SRT) with different fundus imaging methods and to examine the usefulness of optoacoustic value (OA) that was developed as an indicator of RPE cell destruction through optoacoustic signals from bubble formation inside the RPE cells.
After applying laser irradiation in 9 eyes of 9 CSCR patients with SRT laser (frequency-doubled, pulse-stretched Nd:YLF laser; 527 nm, 1.7 µs pulse duration, 100-Hz repetition rate), fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography (FA, IA) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) pictures were taken. The OA values were obtained during irradiation. A fundus camera (FC) and a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (cSLO) were used for FA, IA and FAF. Additionally, two different excitation filters (520 and 580 nm) were used for FAF with a FC. Frequency of detecting laser irradiation spots was examined regarding each fundus imaging method. The correlation between irradiation energy and OA values and another between the fundus appearance of irradiation spots and its irradiation energy or OA values were analyzed.
The frequencies of spot detection with FC-FA, cSLO-FA, FC-IA, cSLO-IA, FC520-FAF, FC580-FAF and cSLO-FAF were 93%, 95%, 92%, 97%, 81%, 94% and 32%, respectively. The OA values were closely correlated with the irradiated laser energy (R=0.87, p<0.001). Test spot appearances in FA, IA and FA-FAF were highly correlated with both irradiation energy and OA value.
A cSLO-IA showed the highest frequency of detecting SRT irradiation spots. Moreover, the OA value was considered appropriate to determine treatment energy strength.
