Abstract

Purpose: : The aim of this study was to determine whether the use of prophylactic intracameral cefuroxime during phacoemulsification cataract surgery is associated with modification of macular profile or thickening in the postoperative period, using the OCT.

Methods: : A group of 30 patients received 1 mg of intracameral cefuroxime at the end of the pakoemulsification procedure, and a second group of 30 patients didn’t receive any antibiotics. Optical coherence tomography was performed the day before the surgery, 7 days after and 1 month after.

Results: : Intracameral cefuroxime didn’t have a statistically significant effect on postoperative macular thickness and morphology compared with non administration. All patients in both groups achieved a postoperative best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better.

Conclusions: : The use of 1 mg of intracameral cefuroxime was not associated in this study with increased macular thickness or morphology modification 4 weeks postoperatively.
