Abstract

Purpose: : To compare contrast sensitivity in myopic patients who underwent LASIK surgery.

Methods: : A prospective study in patients with myopic eyes, 18 years older, whose contrast sentivity was examined prior to LASIK surgery. Patients were selected having no prior surgeries and no other ocular diseases. The contrast sensitivity was measured using Sine Wave Contrast Test (SWCT). The results were analyzed using Student’s T test for paired measures and Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS v12.

Results: : We included 50 eyes of 25 patients grouped by spherical equivalent in low-moderate myopia (<-6.00D) and high myopia (>-6.00D). The contrast sensitivity changes observed at medium to high spatial frequencies (6, 12 and 18c/deg) were statistically significant in the general population and the high myopia group P value = 0.001. The patients in the low-moderate myopia group had no statistically significant differences (p = 0.325).

Conclusions: : We observed changes in contrast sensitivity especially in middle and high spatial frequencies. This translates into an increase in discomfort in lower lighting conditions therefore we can infer that patients will experience discomfort at night that cannot be explained by induced aberrations of the optical system.

Clinical Trial: : Fundacion Hospital Nuestra Senora de la Luz, 0
