Previous studies (Karadeniz. 2001) reported a decrease in retinal blood flow in postmenopausal women in comparison with younger women and predict a higher risk for women to develop ocular disease after menopause than men of similar age. Moreover, it is well known that estrogens and other female endogenous hormones clearly have an effect on vascular tonus and blood viscosity. We hypothesize that variations of retinal blood flow in the eye should occur in response to the variation of the levels of different female hormones throughout the menstrual cycle.
Five healthy women between 20 and 30 years old participated in the study. They had no ocular diseases and were not taking any drug or contraceptive medication. Based on a model of optical reflectance and absorption, we derived the oxyhaemoglobin and haemoglobin blood content in optic nerve head capillaries from full spectrum (450-650 nm) reflectometry measurements using a version of the "On line Spectroreflectometry Oxygenation Measurement in the Eye" instrument (OSOME Faubert & Diaconu US Patent # 5,919,132).The levels of the oxyhaemoglobin (HbO2) and haemoglobin blood content in the optic disc capillaries were measured during 60 seconds, with two day interval until a complete menstrual cycle period was covered.
The results show that the HbO2 level in the optic nerve microphone-capillaries varies during the period of the menstrual cycle. For all the subjects there was a relative minimum of blood oxygenation 3 to 4 days before the period for predicted ovulation. The oxygenation attains a maximum for the middle of menstrual cycle period. Following the oxygenation regress to reach a new minimal before the beginning of a new menstrual cycle.
The results of this study suggest that the estrogens or other endogenous hormones can affect the contents in oxy-hemoglobin of the blood from the optic nerve head capillaries for the menstrual period of cycle.
