Abstract
Purpose: :
To compare the visual quality of patients with two different implanted lenses after cataract surgery, Opthec® Orange PC 440Y and Alcon® IQ SN60WF IntraOcular Lenses (IOLs)
Methods: :
25 eyes with implanted Orange IOL and 25 eyes with IQ IOL were selected among randomly chosen patients who underwent cataract extraction and IOL implantation. Meanage was 69±10 years in the Orange group and 69±6 years in the IQ group (p>0.05). Inclusion criteria were: no surgical complications and no other visual diseases or previous surgeries; endothelial cell count > 2000 cells/mm2; low level of High Order Coefficient Aberrations (All Zernike coefficients < 1.5µm; unexplainable reduction of post best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (BCVA>0.8 decimal) and no important misplacement of the IOL. Main outcome measures were: Uncorrected and Corrected monocular Visual Acuity (UCVA, BCVA); Contrast sensitivity function (CSF) in photopic (80cd/m2) and mesopic conditions (3cd/m2); corneal topography. Measures were conducted for each eye previously (PRE), one month after (POST1), and three months after the surgery (POST3).
Results: :
UCVA and BCVA improved after surgery: Orange group values were 0.72±0.29 for PRE, 0.09±0.27 for POST1 and 0.00±0.47 for POST3 in logMAR units; IQ group were 0.66±0.29 for PRE, 009±0.27 for POST1 and 0.00±0.47 for POST3 in logMAR units. Differences were no significant POST1 p=0.26, POST3 p=0.97. However, final BCVA were reached faster for IQ group. CSF alsoimproved after surgery: Photopic values lie in the normal range for their age: IQ is slightly higher than Orange, but it was not significative (p>0.33). In mesopic conditions, both groups also have a similar CSF which follow the same distribution (p=0.67). However, these value were higher than the average for their age. Finally, all Zernike coefficients (but prisma, coma, and some 4th order coefficients) from corneal topography showed a fair correlation between PRE and POST3 for both IOLs types.
Conclusions: :
Cataract surgery barely induces changes on the corneal topography once after 3 months of recovery. After that time, Orange and IQ IOLs yield to similar performance in terms of BCVA and CSF. However, CSF values in mesopic conditions for both groups are higher than expected for their age, suggesting that blue filters might improve mesopic vision.
