Abstract

Purpose: : To evaluate and compare retinal sensitivity threshold and fixation characteristics obtained by means of two different microperimeters in pathologic eyes.

Methods: : Twenty-one eyes of twenty-one patients were included into this study. All eyes underwent fixation characteristics determination and differential light threshold quantification in the macular area by both MP-1 microperimeter (MP-1 Nidek Technologies, Gamagori, Japan) and the microperimetry tool of the OCT/SLO (MP OCT/SLO; Opko Health Inc, Miami, FL, USA). The macular area (20°) was examined using exactly the same parameters with both instruments. Patients were randomly divided into two groups: the first group underwent firstly MP-1 examination and two hours later MP OCT/SLO examination, and viceversa for the second group. Results were quantified by masked, experienced examiners.

Results: : Studied eyes were classified as: 15 non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and 6 age-related macular degeneration. There was no correlation between fixation characteristics obtained with MP1 and those with spectral OCT/SLO (absolute agreement: 52.4%). Mean differential light threshold with MP1 was 14.7 ± 4.9 dB and 9.4 ± 3.8 dB with MP OCT/SLO, (p<0.0001). Duration of microperimetry test was 9.3 ± 2.9 minutes with MP1 vs 10.8 ± 1.7 minutes with MP OCT/SLO (p<0.005). Different microperimetry data, obtained by the studied instruments, were not influenced by macular disorders.

Conclusions: : Both MP1 and MP OCT/SLO microperimeters allow automatic, and direct quantification of retinal threshold and fixation characteristics of macular area in pathologic eyes. These two instruments give different results even with the same stimulation patterns. Therefore data cannot be currently directly compared.
