Abstract

Purpose: : To determine psychiatrics disorders and the coping capacity associated with keratoconus.

Methods: : An observational, transversal, case and controls, one masked, at the Fundación Hospital "Nuestra Señora de la Luz", IAP, from april to october 2008 . To carry out, the visual noticed questionaire, psychiatrics test MINI and Echelle Toulousaine of Coping, graded by a Psychiatrist. Patients were divided in groups. Group 1: keratoconus, group 2: myopia, group 3: healthy and group 4: controls.

Results: : We were a total 44 patients, group 1: 23, group 2: 7 patients and group 3: 14 patients, the group 4: had a total of 21 patients. Visual satisfaction group 1: had 7 patients and group 4: 15 patients [p: 0.007], the 3: group 14 patients [p: 0.000]. Visual limitation in the group 1: had 9 patients and the group 2: 6 patients [p: 0.031]; the group 3: 1 patients [p: 0.034]. Passive coping in the group 1: the 65.22%, the group 4: 28.58% [p: 0.015]; the group 3: 14.29% [p: 0.003]. Depression in the group 1: 34.79%, the group 4: 52.38%, the group 2: 71.43% and the group 4: 42.86%. Generalized anxiety disorder in the group 1: 52.18%, the group 4: 33.34%, the group 2: 42.86% and the group 3: 28.58%. The others disorders were: alcoholism in the group 1: 34.79%, the group 4: 14.29%. In the group 1: only were: maniac, postraumatic stress disorder, anorexia and bulimia, compulsive obsessive disorder, antisocial disorder. Anxiety (39.13%); comparative group 1/ group 4 [p: 0.001], with the group 2 [p: 0.048] and group 3 [p: 0.007].

Conclusions: : In keratoconus the anxiety, generalized anxiety, cognitive conformist, with passive acceptation of the stress predominated. Also the satisfaction and limitation of visual acuity were factors for development psychiatrics disorders.
