Abstract

Purpose: : To evaluate the types of glaucoma in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) and analyze the glaucomatous change of the patients with normal intraocular pressure (IOP).

Methods: : A retrospective analysis of the patient charts with the diagnosis of PXS was performed. The types of glaucoma were classified based on the IOP, optic disc examination, visual field test results, and optical coherence tomography(OCT) results. Except for the pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PXG, high IOP), normal IOP patients with PXS were divided into glaucoma and non-glaucoma groups. Later, glaucoma group was clinically compared against non- glaucoma group.

Results: : Records of forty patients with PXS were evaluated. The mean of patient age was 72.6 ± 7.95 years. There included the bilateral PXS in eight patients. Among the PXS eyes, high pressure glaucoma was found in 21 (43.75%) out of 48 eyes, normal pressure glaucoma in 5 eyes(10.42%), and non-glaucoma in 19 eyes (39.58%). However, in the fellow eyes without PXS, 2 (6.25%) of 32 eyes, 8 eyes (25%), and 20 eyes (62.5%) showed the above symptoms respectively. In effect, PXS affect the glaucomatous change (odds ratio = 2.544, P = 0.045, 95% CI = 1.014 - 6.385). By contrast, in PXS patients with normal IOP (20 patients, 4 bilateral PXS), PXS did not affect the development of glaucoma (odds ratio = 0.579, P = 0.456, 95% CI = 0.136 -2.456). Although it was not significant, IOP of glaucoma group was higher than non-glaucoma group.

Conclusions: : Diverse types of glaucoma exist in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome. Additionally it is necessary to study the normal pressure glaucoma in East Asian patients especially
