Abstract
Purpose: :
The role of vitreous in the pathogenesis of exsudative AMD has been already confirmed. The mechanisms of development are still unclear. Traction forces might play a role in the development of neovascularisation.
Methods: :
Cirrus HD OCT (Zeiss) and Spectralis OCT (Heidelberg engineering) were used to gain further insights of vitreoretinal relationships in patients with different types and stages of exsudative AMD. Furthermore improved visualization was achieved with ray-traced 3-D reconstruction.
Results: :
Twenty eyes of 20 patients, mean age 76 years, 16 female, were included. 3-D high resolution OCT of location and size of vitreomacular adhesion in NV-AMD showed a high correlation between the area of traction and the origin of NV and could demonstrate traction vectors and directions with high precision. For example, iuxtafoveal and extrafoveal adhesion of the vitreous was found in iuxtafoveal and extrafoveal choroidal neovascularisation, suggesting that vitreous-traction might play a role in the development of NV.
