Abstract

Purpose: : To investigate the modulation transfer functions (MTF) of two refractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Methods: : The multifocal IOLs ReZoom (AMO) and Array (Allergan) were evaluated using the OPAL Vector system (Image Science) and a model eye with a variable aperture (2.1-5.5 mm). MTFs were evaluated at distant, near, and intermediate (-1.5 D defocus) focus lengths.

Results: : The ReZoom distant focus MTF for a 5.1 mm effective diameter was higher than that of the Array. At intermediate distance, the ReZoom showed a slight increase compared with the Array. The near focus MTF in the ReZoom began to increase at an effective diameter of 2.1 mm and remained constant for diameters > 3.45 mm.

Conclusions: : ReZoom gave better image quality than the Array, particularly at a distant focus. To enhance near vision with the ReZoom, the desirable real pupil diameter should be at least 3.45 mm.
